Couple of answers to your questions:

        1.  Are you printing a flattened image?

As i said earlier, the image is multiframed, to enable me to produce various
interface design elements for different parts of the site independently in
the same image.

        2.  What color mode are you working in?

as far as i am avare, i am working in RGB, there doesn't seem to be a way of
changing the colour mode to CMYK (unless i am stupid and haven't spotted it,
no comments please!!). 

        3.  How about print screen, paste it back in to Fireworks, and print
it out?

tried this already, still comes out skew wiff. dark blue #333399 prints out
as vermillion roughly #cccc33 as an example

           This may give you an idea if it is the file, or if it is your
monitor which
           is giving you an incorrect color profile.

I am using hex figures to define the colours used in the images to comform
to a 'site pallette'

still bemused and confused :(
