a reason NOT to use it? I dunno, I don't always use it. I don't use
it on my XHTML pages (I see your syntax) and have no problems...
But check this:
try to validate this site:
http://www.wise-women.org/
at the w3c html validator.
And you'll get this response:

A fatal error occurred when attempting to transliterate the document charset.

The error was "iso8859-1 undefined; replace by iso-8859-1".
