I installed mdk8 (mandrake 8.0) two weeks ago and have been very happy 
with it. I use it as a desktop machine and it performs admirably. I'm 
also a linux newbie and found that this is the most friendly version 
I've tried. RedHat 7.1 is really nice also.

mdk8 includes KDE 2 - a very nice desktop environment
