Don't know if it applies here (since I only have a demo of PhotoShop 5.5,
PC) but I've noticed with other programs that if something kinky happense, I
need to shut the program down, start over and all is well.  Maybe it's only
a Windows thing.  But next time you're faced with something like "the
incredible missing ruler", you might want to try shutting down the program
and restarting to see if it fixes itself.
