When going through chat.msn.com the first time, Microsoft itself pops
up a box with some WindowsMedia audio in it. Then they ask you if you
hear it and you click "yes" or "no". 

That's how they determine if you have WMP installed, and since they
wrote the darn thing (and the browser) it'd be my guess that there's
probably really no quick/clean way of doing it otherwise.

Of course, if that's not the case <insert anti-Microsoft statement
here>  :P.
