Leaving a layer with a background works great when you create it.  However, if
you want to use this layer over and over, you need to make sure that you never
use a layer that has a background and try and set it to null.  This results in
a "glitch" where by the transparent are becomes a black hole that mirrors any
part of the screen that was previously being displayed in that part of the
page.
