[thelist] MetaFilter JS

I had big plans tonight to use some JS code used found on MetaFilter.  Small 
Problem.  The site is currently in hibernation mode while Matt is away on 
vacation.

Let me throw out the usual preface that I am no "js guru".  That said, I was 
hoping to learn something by dissecting his code.

When a member submits to MF, they can highlight text and press ctrl+B to 
bold, ctrl+I to italicize, etc.

I have some other ideas, but I figured this would be a good place to start.

Can anyone on the list point to another site which has this type of 
functionality or possibly a tutorial that covers the subject?
