Java Applets will not run in Native IE6
you will have to download the JVM for your applet
which is a huge download on a modem
and do a Java detect if such a thing is possible
big ass button saying
"click here for Java and go to bed, we will see you for breakfast!"

personally I would not spend a lot of time programming in Java,
(accessibility is the big issue, but that is me) despite the fact that the
promise of build once run anywhere has been largely proven.
I see it's elimination as a poke in the eye of Sun, and a embrace, extend
and extinguish strategy by MS.
It is not a Microsoft Product and it is not a "feature customers are
clamoring for" like "clippy"

If you want to play applets you will need to play.NET and learn C# and start
the 'Only Viewed With' game over again.

I would not plan on rolling out anything that will depend on MS technology
real soon. There are a number of actions pending regarding the anti-trust
lawsuit, the privacy and security issues surrounding Passport, .Net, and
other monopoly practices that will push the release of XP back till at least
next year.

Regardless of all of the bleating about XP saving the computer industry,
ennobling mankind, eliminating world hunger and the eventual sainthood of
Jim Alchin.

Oh yeah the hardware requirements. you will need a lot of it.

drivers, software, compatibilty.. just off the top of my head.

I owe a tip.
