Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

-------------------- Start of message text --------------------

Hi Ed

If all you need are simple aggregated usage figures, WebTrends
will do the job fine.

However, there is a limit to the usefulness of such simple info -
a more useful approach is record site events against users and
correlate them against pre-specified scenarios, so you can
identify problems with the site's design and have improved angles
of attack.

And because you've got the user info recorded, you can then work
out which bits of the site site are causing problems for which
specific subset(s) of users, and prioritise and tune the fixes accordingly.

The reason for asking which CMS you were running btw is that some
(Vignette for one) gives you this as part of the product set.

Cheers
Martin

This would be sitting on a web server running a custom CMS.
The stats would be for business types who need basic usage stats found in
most packages like WebTrends and LiveStats. I was curious as to the best
products out there in this category.
