Just on the default timeout - it's actually 90 secs.  You can reset to any
number as long as it's higher than that.

Also, it is set in seconds, so using <% Server.ScriptTimeout = 3600 %> means
you're actually setting it for an hour - which means if you do have a
problem, you're not going to know about it for a very long time...!

On the other mail components - JMail is excellent, if you've got access to
that.  Full mass-mailing capabilities.
