Hi there,
I believe the hiermenus are no longer free. They have licensing
information links all over the site and in the documentation of the
scripts and when I emailed for licensing information the response was
that licensing was $1500 US per site.

hiya malcolm!
i've had good luck with the hiermenus from dhtml labs. they're free,
have
good documentation (albeit a tad scattered), and they release new
versions
for free with bug fixes about every 2 weeks.
http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/hiermenus/latest/
sniffs for ya, loads fast, customizable.
it takes a whole afternoon to dig through the archives to understand how
they work since the docs are split up into about a dozen columns. but
after
that they really only take about 2 hours to set up and then you're good
to
go!
i also like the projectseven.com dreamweaver layer-based dhtml menus,
but
the dhtml labs' one is quite robust.
