First of all, by default RedHat 6.x will not let you
login remotely as root.

If you have a regular user account which you can use
on the machine, you could use a password cracker to
(a) determine whether the password you _think_
applies actually does and/or (b) find the password
if it's an actual word (you could use brute force
even if it's not but that'd take ages).

I can't see that the machine would just magically
stop allowing you to login. Are you sure you didn't
change the password or, worse, have a breach of some
kind?
