Don't know if it behaves like this for Win as well as Mac, but the Sonys
work exactly like this. I'd be surprised if that weren't standard behaviour
for USB cameras.

True - a nice flexibility. The Sony DSC-P1 also does this.

Although the pics may only end up being used at 640x480, you'll tend to
get better quality from larger originals reduced with Photoshop. More
data is better on the whole.

I'd also look at quality of lens - that's one of the big let-downs of
cheaper
cameras. There's a higher end Sony which has Zeiss lenses (and
interchangeable
ones too). I'd expect interchangeables to become more common in the
higher end cameras.
