This is almost what our reporters here use, basically - they all travel with
a hand-held minidisc recorder. After recording in the field, they connect to
their laptops, do the editing, and encode in MP3. The laptop itself is a
little unwieldy when you need to move around quickly and easily. They've
recorded in very strange places this way and gotten great results. One
important point, though is that mic you mentioned...they always have a good
mic connected to the minidisc recorder.
