[thelist] SMIL

Hi,
some nice SMIL/SVG syntax examples can be found here:
http://www.kevlindev.com/tutorials/index.htm

(SVG plugin is needed http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html )

What would be an interesting point to address in an article, would be
whether SMIL has any real-world use, or future.
It seems that after the hype has cleared only Real-player and Adobe's
SVG-viewer have actually implemented it
I have tried to use the SVG implementation in real-world situations, and
have had to drop it, and code all animations in Javascript due to
performance problems. (on p3 500Mhz 400mbRam).

To illustrate this you can compare processor use on these examples on the
Kevlindev page:

JavaScript and the DOM (using SMIL elements)
JavaScript and the DOM (integer - does not match SMIL)
JavaScript and the DOM (parametric - matches SMIL)

It may well be that the Real-player implementation is much better, or that
there are other implementations out there, so I look forward to your
article.

Cheers,
Richard.
