i've never encountered any that didn't support that standard of setting a
cookie for the domain and all subdomains using the dot-prefixed method --
".domain.com". can you provide a list of browsers that "get screwed up"?

if what you say is true regarding cookies is true, then i might agree.
however, i have no knowledge that supports your claims and choose to believe
instead that ebay is simply lazy (the case with most sites that redirect to
"www." or don't have the site setup to work without the "www.").

<tip type="ColdFusion" author=".jeff">

want to use directory-style querystrings and have your urls end in ".cfm",
but running into a snag where the coldfusion server returns a handy-dandy
coldfusion 404 document? if you have access to iis on the machine your site
is on, then simply edit the properties for your site. go to the "home
directory" tab. click the "configuration" button. scroll down the list of
application mappings until you find ".cfm". select it and click the "edit"
button. uncheck the box labeled "check that file exists". do the same for
the ".dbm" file extension as well. now your 404 errors will be handled by
iis.
