Maybe the compromise is to have the comments commented so you can
see them in the source code, but not in what gets sent to the browser (so
the server strips them). It's easy enough with CF:
<!---# This is a comment! Note the 3 dashes --->
and also in Zope:
<dtml-comment>
Hey here's my comment. You won't see it from the browser
</dtml comment>

I guess other languages will have similar constructs.
