For PC, I alternate between the (free) LeechFTP and (free) SmartFTP.
LeechFTP is simple, and will always get what you need (say if you have
to back up a 200meg web site) where SmartFTP has a few more features and
is more Windows-like.

For the Mac, Fetch 3.0.3.
