try to make a pdf out of the word document. You can import this
pdf file into photoshop und capture the photos. by playing with
the pdf properties u can optimize your results.

I have been sent a word doc that contains 3 photos. The client does not
have the original jpgs. Is there anyway to extract the photos from the
word doc so they can then be manipulated and placed on his website?
I couldn't find anything in word help. The only idea I have is to take a
screenshot and then fix up in Photoshop but is there a better way than
this?
