People are people. You really *can* just start talking to the fellow
next to you. He'll respond, especially if you ask him about his work.
Most of the time you'll just have a short, pleasant conversation.
Sometimes you'll learn something of interest. Once in a while it'll
lead to a business opportunity.

Exchange business cards. (And immediately write a note to yourself on
the back of the card, describing the talk.) Smile. Ask questions.
Relax.

When you get back to the office, write up a short note to the boss.
Don't wait for him to ask you. The note should be a summary of the
sessions you attended, with emphasis on anything of direct help to your
work. If you were fortunate enough to meet someone who could possibly
bring revenue to your company, mention that. These things help to
justify the expense of the conference (and the next conference.)
