Unfortunately most ISP's now-a-days use a combo of the username/computer
name and IP address to formulate the hostname of that machine. For example,
road runner uses a city+ip based hostname like
roc-12-23-34-45.rochester.rr.com.
Ben, to see if you can use your external IP, hit up this site:
http://www.whatismyip.com
From that you could try to go to http://youriphere and your modem/router
might let you through, but it sounds like either jeff is correct with his
assumption about your ISP using a NAT-type system for their customers or
your modem is purposely "protecting" you from the outside world. How will
you get around that? Only your ISP or a fellow customer would be able to
tell ya. =/
