hiya b!

gosh, blogs. . . yeah i guess they've finally gone mainstream in the last
year, hmm? blogger's home page has a ton of links to articles about blogger
and weblogs, lots of thumb-sucking thought on "how blogs will change the
world" or whatever. <Grin>

i myself had several personal projects. for example, i wanted to perfect a
recipe for poilane-style french bread so i could make it at home and not pay
$7 a loaf for it at dean & deluca. i kept a lot of notes. i also wanted to
learn to make great espresso at home because i refuse to pay $6 for a
cappucino; and i kept a lot of notes. i was also compiling addresses of
artisan chocolatiers. . .then i got into yoga. . .that's when i friend of
mine said, you really oughta make a blog of this stuff. not only will you
have your "notes" archived and searchable, other people will be into it.

and i said, no way! who wants to read my notes about bread, coffee,
chocolate and yoga. nobody cares about any of these things except some
freaks at alt.coffee who know it all already! but i was persuaded and i
guess he was right since the silly thing gets about 7,500 pageviews a month.
not bad for a personal-type site, i guess, although it's no zefrank.

maybe some of it is web designers with free time, and some of it is family
photo stuff, and some people are publishing novels, art, or whatever. but
probably the coolest aspect of it is the professional journalists who are
using them to publish semi-pro political mags on the side. actually, iirc,
andrew sullivan and m. kraus are now doing their blog mags full time and
apparently are actually making enough money to live on from them. then the
meta-blogs -- blogs about the process of blogging -- seem to be
proliferating too.

have fun,
f
