I can't really see what the big deal is.
5 years ago I updated my personal site every day with news, putting
little tidbits of info (personal and not) in the posts, today this
would be a blog, back then it was just a site.
Sure, it was done by hand rather than the custom coded PHP scripts I
use today to manage all my site content, but was it that different?

I do see what you mean, frankly I'd say its more a case of people
being aware that they can publish their thoughts daily via regular
online content. But then again, compare this to a few thousand USENET
users doing the same thing in a different way. Its really just a
continuation of things.
