The "if" in that statement should be a clue that it's not something I would
either do or reccommend. But if someone is so firmly committed to the
purity of  a document's structure that the mere idea of setting a paragraph
ending with a list as two separate structures is unthinkable, then it is
possible to supply the div and work with that.
