Never deliver until payment is received.
Once you deliver the final product, you are at the mercy of the client and
the person that pays their bills. If you want to receive payment in a
prompt manner, hold out delivery until the check is received. If you want
to be fair, make some kind of partial delivery agreement or something along
the lines of 1/2 upfront, 1/2 on delivery.
That is unless you want to be sneaky and include a kill switch... but that's
a different story.
In addition, never start work without a contract and an agreed upon
rate/lump sum.
NEVER.
