Sorry I'm kind of late responding to this.

I used DHTML extensively in earlier versions of my own site:

Ultimately, I found the format a bit too restrictive and I went for a
more back-to-basics approach with the present incarnation but I was able
to use some of the DHTML tricks I had learned in some other work.
You can see my DHTML in action at the Vitra site (http://www.vitra.com/)
especially in the "products" section. Overall, though, I wouldn't say
it's a great example of DHTML being any better than Flash.

For a very simple (but, in my opinion, pretty effective) use of DHTML
using the W3C DOM, check out http://www.thesession.org/
Clicking on the tabs shows/hides layers. That's basically it. The nice
thing is that, because of its simplicity, it degrades nicely on older
non-DOM browsers.
