In all honesty, pre-OSX, there is no good working version of php/mysql that
you can run that would be worth learning on.

There are a few hacks that allow you to do php with an ODBC database, but
it's WAY too complicated for a user that is trying to learn php/mysql.

I'd recommend upgrading the iBook to OSX to learn.  I don't recommend Yellow
Dog since I've seen it completely ruin a bunch of machines including iBooks.
