According to my physics book, the human eye is able to distinguish about
800-1100 different colours over the entire spectrum, with more
distinguishable colours the longer you get towards the red part of the
spectrum. Also, the bigger part of the spectrum you're looking at, the less
distinguishable colours near each other in the spectrum will be. Thus, if
you have one red and two blue areas, you might not be able to distinguish
the two blues, while if you have one yellow and two green, you'll be able
to distinguish the greens from each other.
