Why not lose the accelerator and the brake and the steering wheel
altogether and replace them with an AutoDrive system and a manual
over-ride joystick control in the center console.

Once someone does something like that, everyone will like it that much
that every other car manufacturer will _have_ to either put out a similar
or better design or risk looking behind the times. Won't they?
