[thelist] Logins not working right

I don't know much about the AOL 6 browser, but I have had a similar problem
in the past with Internet Explorer. A couple of years ago, I had a client
who was complaining about having to enter his password twice. We never
fully figured out whether it was the browser or the way the server was set
up (which was running FreeBSD), but whether he had to enter the password
twice or not, depended upon the URL he used to call the site with.

For instance, if his bookmarks or an internal link on our site sent his
browser to our protected directory on http://fictitiousdomain.com, he would
be prompted for his username and password. Then his IE would automatically
resolve the URL in the address bar to http://www.fictitiousdomain.com and he
would be prompted again. If I could get him to type in
www.fictitiousdomain.com in the first place, then he would only be prompted
for his password once.

The only thing I could do for him was to go through and make sure that all
of our internal links to that directory were consistent and all had the
"www" in them. It was tough to explain to him that I could neither control
the links that search engines provided, nor what other people might type
into their browsers' address bars.

I hope this helps in some small way.

On freelancesuccess.com, I'm limiting access to certain subdirectories by
setting up .htaccess and .htpasswd files. Some of the users report having to
type in their logins and passwords multiple times. One user reports that she
must sign in as many as six times before she can get access and that
clicking the "Save this password..." checkbox doesn't work.

The server is running FreeBSD and the user has the AOL 6 browser. Any ideas?
