PHP uses a native set of functions to interact with MySQL, ODBC is not
needed
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mysql.php

$dbconnect = mysql_pconnect("localhost", "username", "password");
mysql_select_db("dbname", $dbconnect);

is a connection to MySQL followed selecting a database to use.
