And, as with all exceptions, they need to be given explicit business
justification[1] and signoff from whoever's paying you to do it (client,
business sponsor etc). That way, when/if the lawyers come calling, your
ass is very well covered.

[1] Which to be done properly (and for a $100m company, properly is the
only way you can do things) would include a risk analysis and impact
assessment
