Before you invest your dollars, perhaps you could look for some pretty
mature open source projects. I guess some one suggested OSCommerce. I
would also encourage you to take a look at FishCart
(http://www.fishcart.org/) and PhpShop (http://www.phpshop.org/).

FishCart is being used by several people I know, after modifications of
course.
