IE (irritatingly, and stupidly) occasionally supplies its own error
pages rather than allow the server to supply its own.  There's nothing
that can be done for the user

Except that IE will NOT supply its own if the custom document is "large
enough".

In that case, IE "recognizes" that it is a custom document and displays it
"as is" instead of substituting a "friendly".
