[thelist] using "explorer" to open folders?

Hmmm....

How about:

1. Un-installing that shareware you installed
2. Installing MS Tweak UI XP freeware (get a copy at nonags.com) to fix file
associations and icons (may not help but it's a great registry hacking
applet)
3. Win2K has a "repair installation" feature when you load the install CD.
If XP has something similar, you might try that.
4. Search for answer on google groups -- a quick search turned up a number
of posts with similar issues. Might also try
http://www.windowsannoyances.org or http://www.virtualdr.com/ for an answer.

-- a couple of forum posts from that last resource:
http://urlizer.com/00/881/
http://urlizer.com/00/882/ (this one might be on the money for you)

Good luck!

(and do consider giving GoBack a try for the future (might be a trial
download from roxio.com): I've used it for years now and it's saved me hours
and hours of time dealing with Windows and other app's flakiness, as well as
allowing me to recover old files and directories trashed as a result of my
own flakiness).
