ummm...i found out why!

i was using a secure connection for the child page, but not the parent
page.  mozilla seems to keep track of which page has opened the child
window regardless of connection type, ie only does for connections of the
same type.  so when you try and refer to 'opener' or 'parent' or anything
similar, they are null in ie and populated in mozilla.
