there's a way you can do it in sql.  it's as simple as placing a constraint on the email column mandating that every value must be unique.  then, go ahead and attempt your insert. you'll need to wrap the query call in some form of error trapping code.  if no message comes back then it was successful.  if there's a message then an entry with that email address already exists and you need to tell the user.
