I've always used the LE version of PhotoShop -- there may be things the full version does more easily, but I've never found I had to have it just for Web pages, and the LE version is far easier to use. Don't worry about layers -- just flatten them in your semi-final picture. First, of course, you have made your picture (which was in RGB mode when you worked on it) become an image/mode/indexec color, right? We're talking GIF's only for transparency....

Now go to File/Export/GIF89a and in the next screen, select the background color you want to disappear. Now save your file.

Here's the tricky part: when you close the file from which you just exported, do NOT save it under the same name you just gave the transparent GIF. (If you do, naturally it overwrites the transparent version you exported with this file!)
