One of the attractions of php/mysql is the cost. The company does not have a huge amount of money. i understand ms sql server is quite an expensive bit of kit to licence?
Also, I'm not too fussed about 'building on my knowledge' of ASP specifically. As a freelancer I have built projects in a range of technologies (albeit to a moderate level of expertise) so any language would allow me to build on my knowledge.
Thanks, Matt

Although I'm more and more cautious with professing MySQL on a Windows box.
On my machine it sure is unstable (and from what I hear with friends it's
the same on theirs).
Making a transition from Access to MS SQL Server can also be an alternative
and fits in this "build on your knowledge" approach.
My two cents of euros.
