Strange. One shot in the dark would be to check the system clock and see if
it's hosed. I was running Tardis 2000 on my servers (good for syncing
system clock) and it locked up on a corrupted time server causing the
system clock to stay at 14:23 for a few hours.

The GUID is supposed to be globally unique even between machines, and you
are right there is a dearth of information about this function duplicating
itself.
