[thelist] SSI and .shtml file : get rid of ads

Many (most) web servers are configured to process SSI's only when the file
extension is .shtml. Analogous to a server processing an ASP file only when
the extension is .asp. Servers can be configured to process SSI's with the
.html extension (or any other for that matter) but your friend can't control
that.

Hard to know without knowing how those ads are loaded, but I suspect that
even if you could remove the ads, that would violate the TOS of infoseek.

Does your friend have any free web space provided by his ISP, something like
www.earthlink.net/users/~yourFriend?

If so, he could just use that space for hosting his site (without ads). He
could buy a domain name and re-direct it to that free space using the free
service www.mydomain.com.

Another alternative is just to bite the bullet and buy some cheap web
hosting. Hurricane Electric (www.he.net) and Crystal Tech
(www.crystaltech.com) both offer great service starting at $10/mo., and
there's cheaper hosts out there. In the long run, a paid hosting plan might
save him more time/hassle than dealing with a free plan.
