[thelist] quick domain/dns records question

It can be confusing as what is the actual way to reference a web site. The
official URL would be: http://www.lamarathon.com as we already know. We
know that we don't need the http:// (that's a default) The only part of
that address that has to be registered with a Domain Naming Service like
Network Solutions (VeriSign) is the lamarathon.com portion of the address.
The ip address will point to the physical computer that's registered so if
you leave out the www, what ends up getting to them is http://<ip address>
(or whatever).

This kind of addressing will always work if you know the IP address. Where
it gets quirky is if the domain host is an ISP. In that case, every web
site that is hosted there will have the same IP address! The web host's
internal DNS server takes care of directing the appropriate request (e.g.
www.website1.com or www.website2.com) to the correct web site. In those
instances you can't leave out the www in the address. If you do, then
you'll probably end up at the ISP's default web directory (e.g.
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\default.asp) instead of where you wanted to go.
