I always use the specs.

for HTML.

It's not a how-to but with basic how-to knowledge already they work
for me.  If you use the validator then the specs are the perfect
accompaniment.

Some people think the specs are hard to read.  But it just takes
getting familiar with W3C-englisch.

I used to print them out and read them at my leisure or while eating soup.
Stick them in a 3 ring binder or download to disk.

Knowing how to code HTML 4.01 correctly makes it lot easier to write
XHTML if you need to.  It also helps for trouble-shooting CSS.
