.com/net/org cost USD 10 a year. .co.uk/.org.uk cost USD 13, for two years.

You get a cgi set to run, which is fairly easy to change. A PHP one is also
developed externally.

I like OpenSRS a lot, they've always done as asked, and are open in their
approach to their clients (us) and don't approach our clients, unlike some
other services.

If you are registering a volume of .co.uk names it may be worth joining
Nominet http://www.nic.uk at UKP 400, per year, but then domains are UKP 5
for two years.
