fwiw, I read that article a few times and wasn't all that sure of the
mechanism being described either.

Near as I can make out, this is the first article to come out on the other
side of the W3C's change in handling of the existing MS-specific OBJECT
tag. Drew seems to be exploring how various current browsers use OBJECT in
real life.

The W3C validators balk at the presence of an EMBED tag... that's their big
objection. But EMBED has been the standard way to handle plugin content for
most browsers since 1995 or so. We're starting to see more browsers offer
support for OBJECT uses. That's what this article is starting to explore.

I'd recommend staying with realworld validation myself (ie, keeping the
tested OBJECT/EMBED structure), but that decision really belongs to each
person making such pages.
