hi,

apologies about being really ot, but have searched around the net (cnet,
hardwarereview, itreview...) and can't find anything that provides good
advice for ups systems.

i'm basically looking for something that will support three workstations
with emergency shut-down power and surge protection. i'm in the middle of
the countryside where we get relatively patchy power-supply... and
currently am thinking of APC Smart UPS 1000VA Black Line or APC's BackUPS
Pro 1000i

anyone point me in the right direction?

i find that keeping an eye on the number of sites i manage, with the array
of hosts that i'm using, that downtime can become a major headache. i've
been using the server uptime monitoring system provided by openACS -
http://uptime.openacs.org/uptime/ - supply an email address and the url of
the site you wish to keep tabs on and add a simple text file to the site's
root and it's done. you receive an email when the system can't access the
file and another when it can, thereby determining (roughly) when the site
was down and for how long.
