Perhaps you could write a regular expression in php to check and replace
common mispellings (I'm a php newbie, so take that with a grain of salt).

Sounds to me like a spell checker.  I'd start with a Google search
for "spell check software" and then see which of the products had
relevant customization features, like a geographical dictionary and
the ability to turn off the main dictionary.
