[thelist] fqdn v. absolute or relative path

hi.

when linking within a website what are the differences between linking
like...

http://servername/directories/if/necessary/page.htm (fqdn?)

...as opposed to...

/directories/if/necessary/page.htm (absolute) OR
../if/necessary/page.htm (relative)

?

i understand that both ways will achieve the same results (that is,
taking you to the place you want to be) however, i'm concerned with how
writing links in either way will affect the server logs? would either
method result in the same stats according to a log analyzer?

you may be wondering why i'm asking this question... two reasons.

1. i am currently building a site which is not in it's final destination
on the server. in other words, the site is being built two levels deep
which is not where it will be when it is complete. when it is completed
it will be cleaned up (i.e. test files removed, etc.) and moved to the
root.

2. i was making a basic (manually adjusted) breadcrumb navigation
"system", and for some reason i decided to write all links in the first
style (this i believe is called a FQDN iiuc?). however, after i had
written many links, i started to think about how it might affect the
server logs and stats it reports.

am i making sense? if so, anyone have anything to add?

thanks,
chris.
