You are exactly right on your preview: onclick="" ... Yet, each time the
user clicks on that link, the database table gets time stamped. the ASP code
is hidden from the browser.

seriously, it couldn't have.  does it create a new log entry each time the
link is clicked on or only once each time the page is viewed?  what did the
link to the pdf look like when you viewed the source in the browser?  i've
got my money in it looking like this:
