[thelist] If not a thumbnail?

We've come to understand that a smallish rendition of an image is called
a "thumbnail". It's typical to find a webpage with several so-called
"thumbnail" images as links to "view larger image".
Lately, I've noticed many of these collective pages are showing only
selective crops of the full image. What should we call these -
"teasers"?
What might be the +/- of using "thumbnails" vs "teasers"?
